St. Francisville Main Street

Louisiana Main Street

We help people save their towns.

Main Streets are the heart and soul of our communities, but they’re struggling. Since 1984, Louisiana Main Street has helped communities—large and small—revitalize their historic downtown commercial districts and neighborhood commercial corridors. A prosperous, sustainable community is only as healthy as its core.

Great places don’t happen by accident.

The Main Street Approach™ is a time-tested framework for community-driven, comprehensive revitalization. Main Streets succeed because people, projects, and resources are aligned around place-specific strategies. The Main Street Approach helps communities get started with revitalization, and grows with them over time.

Transformation Stories

Michael's Men's Store, Homer
Homer

Established in 1948, Michael’s Men’s Store draws customers from across the region for its outdoors gear and apparel, complete with indoor archery range. The exterior was rehabilitated with a Louisiana Main Street restoration grant.

West Monroe
West Monroe

Vacant properties are costly eyesores in many towns. West Monroe successfully utilized two tools to combat this problem. A “Possibilities Tour” of vacant downtown buildings resulted in three real estate transactions. Likewise their vacant property ordinance has returned 25 properties back into commerce.

Homer Park
Homer

Alabama Kinnebrew Park was an overgrown lot on a prominent corner leading into downtown. Main Street Homer transformed it into a pocket park for community events—it’s also a popular photo spot!

Pontchartrain
Slidell

In 2010, a local financial advisor rehabilitated this former department store in Slidell that had been vacant for 20 years. This one project catalyzed numerous others downtown—the mayor said, “We had literally lost Olde Town, and now we got it back.”
